7 Strategies that will work for your enterprise in 2020

Updated: Oct 14, 2019

As we crawl into the last quarter of 2019 you will find headings like the above appearing all over the internet that make you look forward to another year. And then another year.

Do you really go for this strategy of hooking you with an intriguing heading and then sucking you into more of the usual? In this edition, we will discuss the ten strategies that not only will keep you in good stead in 2020 but have done so in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

1. Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a method for your enterprise to continuously inquire, explore and discover. It is a process of framing a question that life on this planet demands; not a mundane existential question. Framing such a question takes you on a journey of Inquiry, exploration and discovery. It surfaces the unknown that one identifies with Cognitive Intelligence. Whether this is done by human or machine or a combination of both, the critical aspect is to make new meaning. It is not the prerogative of a few but rather an essential for everyone to practice. To become an intrapreneur or an entrepreneur, this is a foundational quality. This discipline must be encouraged and institutionalized because it is an enterprise with a pipeline of intellectual property (IP) that will have a higher market capitalization in the future. The product of design thinking are conceptual models.

2. Design

Design follows design thinking and they are completely two different disciplines. Design is the method to engineer solutions. Where solutions must be understood as a combination of engine, components and connectors. Design is the abstract of an application or product. It configures the materials, the process of making and even the distribution and reach to customers. At the heart of design is maximizing the potential of a product and optimizing its accessibility and availability to the customer.

3. Architecture

Architecture is often a philosophical expression of design thinking and design. It is the edifice that relates to the reality and creates the relevance for an enterprise. It creates the environment that is necessary for the two to bring unique product and applications to life that can sustain and help the enterprise thrive in its ecosystem. The infrastructural architecture of yore are yielding to data threaded architectures. This manifestation of the core structure of an enterprise must be constantly renewing in order to accommodate the new while phasing out the old, without causing debt; either in terms of financial, strategic or technology.

4. Transformation

Transformation is the adaptation of either an evolution or a revolution that is emerging as a challenge to the enterprise. If you ride the wave of transformation, it will set you up for leadership and success. The process of adaptation is nothing but growing the threshold of capability; the capacity to transform and the ability to perform. Without this aligned step, the top three would be an utter waste of time and money.

5. Innovation

Only when you have the above four lined up does innovation become a reality. At least, innovation that is disciplined. Innovation is a continuous journey in excellence and it strives to deliver to the customer's aspirations. A key characteristic of innovation is it does allow the use of the term 'minimum' but rather focuses on 'maximum'. In the modern technology driven environment, it addresses the interoperability of Platform, Product, Process and Projects to deliver maximum value.

6. GrowthOps

The sixth strategy that becomes relevant especially in the current digital technology era is the ability to operate the engines of growth and operations concurrently in an enterprise. While the growth engine is focused on the process of mind to market that catalyzes the Invention to Innovation cycle, the operations lends to productivity through the time to market process that catalyzes the innovation to improvisation cycle. In essence it balances the participation of people and resources in the process of transporting intellectual property seamlessly across the stage gates of conceptualization, engineering, industrialization and commercialization in a continuum.

7. DevOps

With the changing of the information technologies (IT) to digital technologies, the software development life cycle (SDLC) must also change. This environment must adhere to the uniformity and standards of the emerging governance, compliance and risks (GRC) which essentially drive the development processes and the development itself with algorithm and intelligence to create risk assured products and services that are truly digital in nature and secure in their application to life.

The above seven strategies are non-negotiable and every enterprise be it a startup or an incumbent should adopt and adapt. These are the building blocks to remaining relevant in the fourth industrial revolution.
